Grotesque forgery
I was assigned to find an piece of art at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum and then make an replica with an different kind of media. Looking around in the museum I found a little brons statue of some kind of animal that had a snail body ,bird legs and a sort of dog face. But this little beast had almost no information just a period when it was probably made and the name Grotesque by anonymous.
With this little information I started my research and eventually found sketches that looked just like him. They where made by an dutch silver smith named Arent van Bolten, searching with his name and Grotesque I found out that there are many Grotesque statues around the world also another one in the Rijksmuseum. With all this information I decided that i didn’t just wanted to go and make another replica, I wanted to give him a real name and life.
And so I made an inside replica of the little creature and create an skeleton. With this I wanted to make it look like he really existed once, to intrigue the viewer.
